The city’s size also contributes to its pedestrian-friendly layout, which enhances its appeal for tourists keen to explore its many attractions on foot.

Is Salzburg expensive?

Salzburg is moderately expensive. It’s pricier than say Thailand or Mexico, but not as expensive as the UK.

Accommodation rates vary, with city centre locations and peak seasons typically being pricier. Dining out ranges from affordable cafes to high-end restaurants, while public transport is relatively cheap. We stayed at a little village about 20 minutes from the city centre because the accommodation was cheaper than the city centre and then used the train and bus services for days out.

Tourist attractions like Hohensalzburg Fortress and Mozart’s Birthplace offer moderately priced entry fees.

Overall, while Salzburg can be somewhat expensive, savvy travellers can balance their budget by opting for more economical choices in dining and lodging, ensuring an enjoyable visit without overspending.

How many days should I spend in Salzburg?

The ideal duration for visiting Salzburg depends on your interests.

If you don’t have long, spend a day or two exploring highlights like the Old Town and Hohensalzburg Fortress.

For a deeper experience, three or four days allow for museums, a Sound of Music tour, and leisurely strolls.

Extend your stay to five days or more to take in cultural events, Alpine hikes and day trips to nearby attractions.

What is the time in Salzburg?

It’s located in the Central European Time (CET) zone. That means it’s one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+1).

If you’re travelling during the summer, don’t forget they hop over to Central European Summer Time (CEST), which is GMT+2.

So, while you’re out there sipping your espresso and taking in those stunning views, remember you’re just an hour ahead of London, and in sync with Paris and Rome.

Parking in the city center can be limited and expensive, and traffic can be congested, especially during peak times. While a car can be handy for exploring nearby areas, exploring Salzburg itself is easily done on foot or by public transport.

While Uber is technically available in Salzburg, taxis are a more common and reliable choice. You can hail one easily with apps or find them at taxi ranks. Public transportation is also excellent in Salzburg.

How to get from Salzburg airport to the city centre

The most convenient and economical way is to take bus line 2 (also known as the “Obus”) from the airport to the city centre. The bus stop is located right outside the terminal building. The journey takes around 20-25 minutes, depending on traffic, and buses run frequently throughout the day.

How far is Salzburg from Vienna?

Salzburg is about 185 miles west of Vienna. If you’re hitting the road, it’s a pleasant drive of about three hours on the A1 motorway. Prefer the rails? The train journey is just as scenic and takes around 2.5 hours, with high-speed trains zipping you from city centre to city centre.

How to get to Hallstatt from Salzburg

Driving from Salzburg to Hallstatt takes around 2 hours. The route is straightforward and offers stunning views of the Austrian countryside. Head southeast on the A10 motorway and then take the B166.

Alternatively, you could take public transport. Take a train from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof (HBF) station to Attnang-Puchheim, then transfer to a local train heading to Hallstatt. The whole train journey takes around 3 hours. Then, for the final leg hop on a ferry across the Hallstätter See, which gives you that quintessential Hallstatt view as you approach the village.

Of course, if you don’t want to do it yourself, there are tours available from the city.

How far from Innsbruck to Salzburg?

The distance from Innsbruck to Salzburg is approximately 150 kilometers (about 93 miles) when traveling by road. This distance can typically be covered in about 1.5 to 2 hours by car, depending on traffic conditions and the route taken. If traveling by train, the journey takes around 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on the type of train and any connections. Both driving and taking the train offer scenic routes through the Austrian Alps, making the journey between Innsbruck and Salzburg quite picturesque.

What is the weather in Salzburg, Austria?

During the summer, Salzburg typically experiences pleasant weather with mild to warm temperatures. Average highs in July and August range from 23°C to 26°C, although temperatures can occasionally reach higher. The city often enjoys sunny days, but rain showers are not uncommon, so it’s a good idea to pack layers and a light rain jacket just in case. The evenings can be cooler, so having a sweater or light jacket handy is advisable. Overall, summer in Salzburg is generally very enjoyable for outdoor activities and exploring the city.
